As they love what they are doing and how well they are succeeding, student often develop a wanting to put more and more work into their playing. I will start new students, especially young students, with folk songs, games and exercises to train the ear, sense of rhythm, and acting muscles, prepare them to be able to read and understand musical notation, and encouragement to perform in a solo capacity when possible. For all students I try to incorporate all elements of music by including appropriate amounts music history and theory into my lessons. For beginners, I tend to utilize Trevor Wye exercises, and slowly incorporate small musical pieces. Although tedious, I believe that scales and etudes make students technically and musically proficient. I therefore include them in my lessons, but ensure the students are gaining the benefit of these exercises.
