For beginning students, I begin by introducing proper technique and the most basic rudiments, start George Lawrence Stone's Stick Control, and introduce basic rock beats. When the student has the fundamentals mastered, we'll begin working on more advanced rudiments and work from Ted Reed's Syncopation. For more advanced students, we will cover odd time signatures, latin grooves, jazz concepts, improvisation, and ways to compose grooves and fills. In 2001 I was 14 growing up in Southern Wisconsin and developed a want to play guitar. I saw one for sale in a holiday catalog and asked my parents if I could get it. Luckily they said yes! My teaching style focuses on addressing the students desires and getting them to acknowledge their progress. Music is about having fun and being inspired by your favorite music. Pinpointing what a student needs to learn their favorite songs helps them progress quickly while being fulfilled. I have developed a method for guitar students of all ages to quickly learn chords and scales so that they can not only learn the chord progression to songs, they can also find the correct scale to "solo" and improvise over them. Once the chord structure and scale are learned I accompany the student, playing along with them so that they can practice playing with another musician and soloing.
