If you are more interested in building a technique playing we can get very methodical studying from the books but if you really want to play, we are gonna play! A big part of my teaching is playing with the students or creating sequences (play alongs) so the student practices music in context. I've been teaching in music stores and privately for 25 years. My students love their lessons and usually study with me for many years. I do not limit my students to a predetermined method. I find, through my own experiences, that this is tedious as well as boring. There are many books I use, including Ted Reed's syncopation for all levels of students, but I focus most of my time with a student to finding out what inspires them to want to learn the drums, and go from there. The first few lessons will be to gauge where the student is at technically, as well as musically. I like to cater to the needs of the student. Lessons can be as fast paced, or slow moving as the student would like. The important thing is to be comfortable with a technique before introducing new ones. Through my career, I won the 1st place of the National Festival in Italy, I received the 1st place of the Local Band Competition in my hometown, and I was one of the top 10 finalists of the National Drum Competition, again in Italy.
