I have been teaching since I was 16. I frequently ran sectionals in my high school as well as at multiple youth orchestras. I taught privately on and off throughout high school and college. I encourage regular practice and help build problem-solving skills because in the end, you are your own best teacher. As far as drumming goes, I believe in the same tenets that were taught to me; start with the basics and core and work your way up. For drums that means rudiments, stick technique and snare basics (books like "Stick Control" -George Stone). But lessons are not a slow grind that maybe one day build up to a full drum set. I was taught (and teach) in a way which mainly focuses first on these essentials (reading, technique etc.), but also incorporates the rest of the drum-set and playing along with other instruments and music. I want to make learning the drums as much fun to the student as possible. If they aren't having fun then I am not doing my job as a teacher. Every students has different inspirations and different passions in music so I make sure to make my lessons specific to each student. I have toured the country with Peter Frampton and others and have played big concerts including Madison Square Garden. I took lessons from several different drummers including Sonny Igoe. I learned during my time that if I wasn't having fun in my lessons it turned into a less enjoyable task. So I make sure that all my students have a good time, they enjoy learning and that I give them the tools to succeed. Read More
