ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:
University of Bridgeport, English Berklee College of Music, Drums
Awards:

Two albums on Elektra/Asylum and several tours around the country as a drummer. Numerous gold and platinum records earned during a career in music production include albums by Mick Jagger, Sheena Easton, The B-52's and Duran Duran.

Overview:
I've been teaching drums for twelve years after spending my working life in the music business. I have worked in many facets of the music business including recording and touring. I have also worked as an A&R executive at a major record label. In my career, I have worked with Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Duran Duran, Bob Dylan and many more. That's why when a student enters my drum studio the walls are lined with gold and platinum record awards which give it a professional and musical atmosphere. I have toured the country with Peter Frampton and others and have played big concerts including Madison Square Garden. I took lessons from several different drummers including Sonny Igoe. I learned during my time that if I wasn't having fun in my lessons it turned into a less enjoyable task. So I make sure that all my students have a good time, they enjoy learning and that I give them the tools to succeed.
EXPERIENCE
In my experience teaching for the past twelve years I have realized a few things including the fact that my methods work. I teach my students to read drum music well enough that most of the younger ones end up playing in the school band. We also play along with real music which I believe is a totally important part of my lesson schedule and it's fun for the student. Many students play the drums in their school talent shows and I work with them prior to the show to ensure a good performance. My older students usually have refined music tastes and I can customize their lessons to focus on their favorite style/styles. My drums studio is spacious and uses two excellent drum sets, a Gretsch set and and a DW set...it doesn't get much better.
METHODS USED
We start by doing proper warm up exercises followed by learning or practicing rudiments. We work on our grip of the sticks and our movements while drumming. In other words, I teach economy of movement for maximum energy. If a student is flailing their arms, we talk about a more fluid movement by utilizing the wrists and incorporating finger control. Then we move on to reading out of instructional books which is then followed by practical application on the drum sets. With a beginner student I find Basix Syncopation for Drums by Alfred Publishing to be a very effective tool. We work from several other books as well when I feel the student is ready.
LESSON STYLE
My approach to teaching is to make sure that the student is moving forward in their ability to not only play but in the ability to understand music and how much of it is structured. At the same time many students are developing a love for music which I find incredibly satisfying. Lessons are customized to each student. During each lesson we play with real music, real songs by use of headphones. This is probably the most fun part of learning - practical application. Yes we use practice pads for rudiments and reading, but we move to real drum sets during every lesson.

Budd is an amazing drum teacher. My son, Ishan, has been learning from him since he was 4 years olden in seven years Budd has transformed him into one of the best drummers in his school. Ishan has been part of advanced bands and honor bands. Budd is passionate and fun. He is patient with kids and lets them try what they are interested in. Several of Ishan's friends have taken lessons from Budd and they all have great things to say about his teaching style. I will highly recommend him. He is very accomplished and has lots of experience teaching students of all ages.
