My lessons revolve around both skill and personality so that my students have a good time while they are learning to appreciate music on a deeper level. Whether my students want to learn the the intricate theory behind the delicate piece they are learning, or if they just want to be able to bang along with Bonham to their favorite Led Zeppelin record, I can get them to that level. Guitar-From playing melodies, fingerpicking, strumming chords, reading music, and tuning your instrument- your instructor will guide you step by step. Students use the Hal Leonard method book to start, which is a great book for introducing basic guitar techniques and methods. As the student advances more materials and techniques will be supplied to the student, or continue using the method books. Styles taught are rock, blues, metal, folk, classical, jazz, country and everything in-between. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I like to start with Piano Adventures by Nancy and Randall Faber. In addition to the method books to introduce music theory I incorporate musical games and flash cards. Keeping lessons fun and stimulating for young students I believe is vital to their growth. For older and more experienced students, I like to personalize my lessons to what the student is interested in while keeping lessons challenging and enjoyable at the same time. Read More

My methods vary on the student and subject. Beginning students will typically focus more on technical pieces of music to improve on certain aspects of a few pieces to perform. More advanced students will still practice technical parts of their music, but less time will be spent on it during a lesson. Advanced level students will spend more time on repertoire and performance. The more advanced a student gets, the more I expect them to practice outside of lessons and apply their newly learned technical skills into their music on their own. Read More

I've been teaching almost as long as I've been playing. By the time I was in high school I had earned the reputation as "the drum guy" and friends would come to me for informal lessons on how to practice and play drums. Some of these students have continued their musical pursuits and have gone on to attend good music colleges and are playing professionally! During my time at college I continued teaching on the side, and since I have graduated and relocated to Portland I have dedicated myself to teaching full-time. Read More

Technique, music theory, rudiments, feel. I'll start out with the student playing a few minutes with me. from there I write up a few bars to see what level of sight reading he/she is at. I personalize every lesson based on the student with writing out warm-ups, rudimentary phrases, and grooves. Read More
