With students learning or continuing education on the piano, like to start with the basics. Once the student begins to have a grasp for that i begin to introduce reading music and theory. I also like to prepare the student to play any genre of music by sheet music or by ear as well. My experience date back to my early college days, where I began as a volunteer piano teacher for veterans in a retirement community. I taught for a few months, when I was approached by two different women, one who wanted me to perform cover songs at the retirement facility that she managed, and another who wanted me to give her husband private music lessons. I started teaching right after high school, helping at band camps and during the season. I started giving lessons soon after and in 2007 I was offered the oppurtunity to be the drumline instructor for a local high school. I would teach there until 2012. I wrote exercises, cadences, their show music, and taught them all the fundementals of marching and proper playing technique. At the beginner level I typically work from method books to ensure a solid development of performance fundamentals. I also like to spend a good bit of time establishing successful warm-up and practice routines. I love to watch a student progress. It gives me such joy to see them happy. I always evaluate every student and I set for them small and realistic goals. I explain to them that in order to achieve a certain goal you must first obtain the facility by practicing the exercises assigned to them. Sometimes its hard for small children to understand why they are doing a certain exercise so I explain to them and show what the drummer is doing on a certain performance they want to emulate and in order to achieve that, they must go through the exercises assigned.
