For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has started to grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. With beginners, I focus on the fundamentals like working out of George L. Stone's 'Stick Control' and introducing rudiments while focusing on overall technique. I also work out of a book called 'A Funky Primer', which is a drum set book that has hundreds of different beat combinations. Depending on how the student progresses and what their overall goals are, I eventually begin to introduce difference genres and styles and more complex and challenging approaches to the drum set. Hello! I am a 22-year-old drummer and graduate of Belmont University's School of Music. I've been playing drums for the last 12 years all while playing local shows, touring, and teaching others how to do the same thing. I'm originally from a small town in rural southern Minnesota where I was in the marching band, jazz bands, and choirs as well as playing in a touring band with my friends. We set realistic goals for pace and have fun. I often mix traditional work with fun work. For example, alongside conventional ways to learn melody and harmony, I'll tie those lessons into specific songs or pieces of music that the student likes, to show the relevance of the material and the importance it has, at the same time keeping the student interested. Each student has a reason for wanting to take lessons and incorporating that into the lessons will give the student more drive to practice.
