I'm a passionate and motivated instructor who loves working with students and sharing my love of music. In 1977, I graduated from the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Performance. In 1999, I was certified to teach Music K-12 by the state of North Carolina after attending NC Central University. Performing all over the US has been one of the greater experiences of my life as a musician, and I've had the opportunity to play in North Carolina, Virginia, Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Kansas, Alabama, Ohio, Florida, and Connecticut. I have loved music my entire life, and I am a fun, knowledgeable and dedicated teacher of both the clarinet and the piano. I believe many students look at a piece of music that seems too difficult and become too overwhelmed to realize that's it's not as difficult as it may first appear. By breaking down music into its components, pitch, rhythm, dynamic, articulation, etc., and tackling each item one at a time, students who thought of music as a strange and foreign language begin to see it as something that just works and makes sense. I believe that music students are not "one size fits all", so I create an individual approach catered to each student's strengths, weaknesses, and interests. For beginners, I typically start with the very basics such as putting the instrument together(if applicable), posture/form, and fingerings. I have been teaching clarinet and piano since 2019. For each student, I focus on developing healthy practice habits (physically mentally) that allow them to be efficient and rewarded by their time spent with the instrument. I help students build a strong foundation of fundamentals so they are able to be successful working on more advanced literature. I began teaching while at music college, and soon found that I enjoyed imparting my love of music to others more than I enjoyed performing myself! I have been teaching private lessons at home and in students’ homes for 10 years. I taught classroom music in school in the UK for 5 years before my move to the USA. I like to allow my teaching style and repertoire to be somewhat directed by the student, while making sure that the music they are playing is a suitable difficulty and teaching them a rounded technique. All of my bands received first division and second division ratings at festivals and my students received first and second division ratings at individual solo and ensemble festivals.
