I began teaching private clarinet lessons in earnest in 2005, working out of a music store in La Mesa; I taught there until 2011. When teaching students who are young, I would first start off with the fundamentals. For example, I would explain music terms to them and develop the new language from there. Once the student has a basic understanding of music, I would then talk about the Circle of Fifths and encourage them to participate in events like concerts or festivals in school.
