For beginners I often start with the Standard of Excellence, but it does not take long before we start to get into more individualized education. For example, a student may be bound for high school jazz band, in which case we will immediately begin on music theory and scale/mode practice from as early as 5th grade. On the other hand, I may have a high school flute student who wants to audition for conservatory, in which case I would use some Marcel Moyse books, orchestral excerpt practice, and standard solo repertoire. Each student is unique. They require their own method and pace of training. My hope is to help the student reach their goals while still enjoying their time practicing for it. The routine that works best for the student will prove itself over time depending on the student. It may be to work one way for one student but not so much for another student. My teaching experience started as a clarinet instructor in an after school program with students from 5th to 12th grade. I have taught for 15 years in the after school music program system in addition to maintaining a private clarinet studio with students of different ages and skill levels. It has been very rewarding to witness my students excelling in their musical journey.
