I am an instructor that focuses on building the whole musician. I can teach multiple disciplines including classical, baroque, jazz, latin jazz, Brazilian, rock, middle eastern, and others. In the last several years I have learned about flute pedagogy and teaching artistry from Marco Granados, audition repertoire and standard repertoire from the BSO's Clint Foreman, and baroque flute/period performance from Na'ama Lion. My philosophy is that flute instruction should extend beyond western concert music and conventional repertoire to build versatile musicians prepared for the modern musical world through a Socratic teaching method that builds the desire to learn. Hello! I'm a Berklee College of Music Alumnus with 20+ years playing experience! I started studying the saxophone at 9 years old and spent most of my early school years performing in community, school, and local college jazz bands around the Seattle-Tacoma area of Washington State. My music has given me the opportunity to travel the world, and in summer of 2016, I conducted a tour of Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda with my band the AfroXchange in conjunction with music therapy organization Global Youth Groove where I hosted jazz masterclasses, as well as performed at clubs and festivals, and assisted a music therapy team around the countryside. Watchign a student improve right before your eyes is incredibly rewarding, as I have learned from my many years of teaching sailing. I think it is crucial to keep the student engaged so that this improvement remains attainable and consistent. This is accomplished by setting many small goals and by tailoring the lessons to the student's interest. If they enjoy classical rep, we will work on that, but if their favorite band is the Dave Matthews Band, we can also work on playing music in that style and many others like it as well. Read More
