I started teaching private lessons in college, about four or five years ago. I have taken students on several different instruments, mainly saxophone, piano and guitar. I find that it is important to encourage students to play and practice the type of music they enjoy, and to have fun performing and learning. I also believe that students should play in recitals, bands, and get other performance experiences while taking private lessons in order to improve their overall musicianship. Read More

If I recommend a piece that the student does not enjoy playing or is too difficult for them, I will accommodate their choice and give them a piece that better suits the student. For non-beginning players, I will look at the pieces they are already playing, and assist them in skills that still need work on their piece. After the piece they are already working on is better, I will assign more pieces and studies that will not only help them with skills that need work, but also improve the skills they are already great with. I instructed beginning students as well as advanced 8th graders in all brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments. Directing and leading concert band, marching band, drum line, and jazz band required me to remain in communication with parents and the community, keep organization and discipline in the classroom, and engage the students with well-prepared lessons and quality band literature.
