I like to make music learning a self-engaged process. Students will keep track of their assignments, make some of the decisions about what music to play, and be expected to practice a minimum of 5 or 6 days per week. Students are sometimes reluctant to have discipline at first, but once they realize that they are making fast progress and overcoming musical challenges, they tend to have a great time. I have had parents of middle schoolers tell me that the structure music lessons have brought to their students' lives has made a huge difference in other areas. Read More

My first love is jazz, and as such I have a strong love of improvisation and aural skills, which I believe are relevant in all forms of music (even Bach improvised!). Once some fundamental skills and theoretical knowledge is ascertained, I like to build on more advanced musical skills like learning songs by ear, being able to identify certain common chord progressions, helpful tips for memorizing pieces, and learning to personalize music through expressive techniques and improvisational application where appropriate. I started teaching jazz, general music and woodwinds at the Rubin Academy of Music in Israel, in 1990. Since then, I have been teaching privately, in private schools and colleges, giving masterclasses and clinics in Germany, Holland, Russia, Canada, Israel, United States. My teaching approach is highly individual and I help a student according to his individuality and needs. Thus, I have been teaching saxophone, flute, clarinet, piano, recorder, voice (popular, classical, church music), music theory, music notation, jazz theory., harmony and improvisation, etc. Read More

As a teacher, it is very rewarding to see my student progress and see their love for music deepen. I like to help students develop at their own speed while guiding them in the right path. I like to help my students find their own voice and creativity in music. It is very important for me to inspire my students by learning who they are and what they are interested in. Read More

For beginning students, I typically start with the basic fundamentals of the instrument, focussing on right posture, grip and sound. For intermediate students there is more freedom. If there is a good understanding of how the fundamentals work, the student can share her / his preference with me. Since I teach all genres, there is a very broad palette to discuss. Whenever I have a good feeling with the student's preference, I'll come up with a system so we can start working on new material. Read More

While my teaching style does depend on the age and level of the student, there are a few values that I maintain. Firstly, one must take good care of their instrument and make sure it is in working order. Often times a student's sound and ability can be compromised by the condition of the instrument they are playing. I make sure to check my student'sinstrumentsfor issues thatcan lead to difficulty in playing. Read More

I always begin a lesson with having the student play a song/piece of their choice, so that they can feel confident and comfortable in their own skin and in the lesson space. For wind instruments, long tones and scales will occur at the beginning of the lesson, and will be followed by study of an etude and/or piece of repertoire. I will ask the student to sing through the piece, so that the student can make a connection with their own voice and with the music, followed by the student reading through the piece with their instrument.
