Originally from Kansas City, I studied vocal performance, choral conducting and music education at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. I have directed and music directed productions all over the United States, including the current Off-Broadway production of Honestly Abe. I have performed a wide variety of leading roles in everything from opera and operetta, to musical comedy and straight drama. My teaching style is to identify what area a student needs help in and to remediate the problem by creating supplemental materials. Showing students what to practice and how to practice are key elements. My methods are geared to improve tone production, articulation, phrasing and musicality. I strongly recommend that students select classical music to practice. I heavily emphasize the playing of scales and arpeggios. There is something so rewarding for me but more importantly for the student when their face opens, they say (and realize): "Oh! I get it...." For young students, we pick beginning repertoire to use based on the kid's and parents' interests. As we explore the interests of the student within our initial framework, I continue to make suggestions as to where we may have the best success. For adults, I teach based on the interests of the student; however, I also encourage a jazz and classical-based pursuit, as this will inform most other styles of music and strengthen the performance ability and musicality of the student.
