My method is altered depending on the student's age, skill level, and ultimate goals. For beginners, we start with the fundamentals of playing and caring for the instrument as well as the basic of reading music. As the student starts to get a firm grasp on the fundaments, we will begin moving towards the goals of the student. Those goals differ from student to student. It may be to be able to play in a community band, earn a first chair seat in your schools band, build a strong audition portfolio, or even just to be able to perfect a favorite song. Read More

The first thing I do when teaching a student is to learn what musical goals and aspirations the student may have. Then, depending on age and experience, I build a custom program for the student, which may include using various books, resources, and even materials which I have created. I have found that this is not only the most effective way for me to teach but also the most effective way to connect with students where they are and for them to learn at their own pace while also enjoying the process. I taught a little in Idaho but really started teaching in earnest when I moved to Colorado. I've taught individuals from the young beginner to the older person looking to relearn a lost art. I have also adjudicated and taught masterclasses. I've found a passion for working with others that I didn't know that I had. I try to offer my students the tools that I wish I had had when I was just starting out, as well as the tools that will eventually render me obsolete. Read More
