Since graduating from Norfolk State University in 2009 with a degree in music education, my career has been devoted to teaching elementary and early childhood music as well as private clarinet and bassoon lessons. After practice with those skills, I will give more challenging pieces and scale studies to start working on their proficiency on the instrument. The student will always get a choice in the amount of work and practice they would like to put in, but the more practice the better. Not only will my students get a choice in how much work they would like to put in, but also in what work they will be doing. Read More

For begining student I typically start with a book called Essential Elements. I supplement some of the things in the book with other literature and hand written exercise to help enhance learning experience. For Adults I try to find what genre and music style they would like to work on. This then allows me to plan a custom learning experience that best suits them and what they're looking to gain from the experience. Read More

At the begining of a lesson I encourage to start by listening and running through the scales and pieces that we last worked on. Make sure they are all well learnt. Before moving on to more scales and next pieces in the selected order at the beginning of class. Aurals are a great way for me to play to my student as they learn more about the selected piece, learn rhythm and also interpreting their selected pieces. Read More

The recording of each lesson gives students something to look forward to at the end of our session. Whether they think that they've done really poorly or extremely well, I encourage them to listen to themselves critically and prepare to share genuine feedback. Then we discuss both their strengths and the areas of opportunity for growth. This practice helps students progress over time. Eventually, they become more expressive, creative, confident, engaged and excited about learning and sharing their talents with others. Read More
