My first love is jazz, and as such I have a strong love of improvisation and aural skills, which I believe are relevant in all forms of music (even Bach improvised!). Once some fundamental skills and theoretical knowledge is ascertained, I like to build on more advanced musical skills like learning songs by ear, being able to identify certain common chord progressions, helpful tips for memorizing pieces, and learning to personalize music through expressive techniques and improvisational application where appropriate. I use standard method books, along with personal sheets of exercises I have developed through the years. I publish my own solo books with accompaniments, which I also use. These books are primarily classical pieces, but I also use digital accompaniments for jazz and popular music. Theory and ear training are also part of my lessons. Instruments taught are flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and percussion, as well as piano. Constructed and teach a music and movement program for autistic and special service students. My favorite books to use for students are the Rubank and Klose methods along with the Albert Scale book. My curriculum is created personally for each student based on their needs, progress rate, and level. No matter what the age, I begin with long tones, which really help to build endurance and control of air. Proper usage of air is top priority with wind instruments. I also love to work on slow to finger exercises to ensure that the fingers being used efficiently and properly. Read More
