Depending on the individual needs goals of each student, I will customize lesson plans on a week-to-week basis. If there are no immediate goals for my students, I prefer to focus on classical technique and tone exercises that I compile through a variety of method books for each woodwind instrument. This includes but is not limited to: Moyse, Kroepsch, Baermann, Ferling, Shaw, Filas, Lacour, and many others. My first love is jazz, and as such I have a strong love of improvisation and aural skills, which I believe are relevant in all forms of music (even Bach improvised!). Once some fundamental skills and theoretical knowledge is ascertained, I like to build on more advanced musical skills like learning songs by ear, being able to identify certain common chord progressions, helpful tips for memorizing pieces, and learning to personalize music through expressive techniques and improvisational application where appropriate. One of the amazing things about music instruction is it allows people (especially younger students) to learn the process of incremental goal setting and achievement for long term success. In 2009 I graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelor of Music degree in Clarinet performance. I have always felt that a good working instrument and body is vital to playing your best, so I studied instrument repair at Renton Technical College near Seattle, WA.
