I have been playing the cello for forty years and teaching for twenty. I love helping students of all ages realize their goals of playing and performing cello music. Although I do not have an academic background in music, I have studied privately with teachers who have been members of the New York Philharmonic and Juilliard faculty. In addition to playing and performing chamber music for the past thirty years in local venues, I am also a co-founder of the American Chamber Orchestra, a community orchestra that has performed for twenty seasons and toured Europe with performances in many countries. I have over 13 years of private teaching experience with cellists of all ages and experience levels. As a soloist, ensemble member, and participant in international festivals and competitions, I have performed throughout the US, China, Canada, Switzerland, and Russia. I have performed as a soloist with various orchestras throughout Connecticut including the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, and was a member of Carnegie Hall's National Youth Orchestra of the USA. Though my education is in classical music, I am also an experienced performer and arranger of pop, rock, and other contemporary music, and aim to allow students to use the cello to find their own artistic voices in whatever genres they enjoy most. My teaching style is a combination of Suzuki method and traditional method. Having learned with the traditional method, I feel it is vital and extremely important for students to learn to read music from the point at which they start reading books and words, this is typically at age 5. For students under age 5 we begin learning everything by ear, once they start reading we introduce reading notes. I'm passionate about having a parent present for every lesson as it is extremely important that a parent or caretaker learn the material so they can be the teacher at home during the week for practice sessions. I currently work as a pianist for various Ballet companies and have studied music performance at the Juilliard School and San Francisco Conservatory of music. We will learn and explore the capabilities of the very large instrument by studying literature and repertoire that helped develop the instrument into what it is today. I teach anyone who shares the passion for cello (or violin, or chamber music). I tend to attract many adults who always wanted to play the cello, but postponed it, and finally decided its now or never. Similarly, I teach a number of adults who played through adolescence, but quit, and now want to return to playing.
