In 1984 I was a music instructor for the Canadian Forces School of Music in Esquimalt British Columbia. Over the last three decades I have taught one-on-one lessons and ensembles at all levels including Elementary, Middle, and High School levels. My approach to learning an instruments is to have the students learn to play by ear first before they can start learning to read music. I find that most students are able to progress quickly because it frees them to focus on the playing the instruments rather than reading notes. Started playing the cello at the age of nine, I grew up pursuing my passion as a classical performer, and now have passion in sharing it to others. I graduated at Boston Conservatory at Berklee with a Bachelors of Music Performance. At the age of 15, I had my first stage debut at the Winners Solo Concerto Performance with the W Philharmonic Orchestra. For beginning students I like to begin with a combination of Hal Leonard's Essential Elements and Suzuki Method books. I find Essential Elements to be useful for learning the fundamentals of playing the instrument and music theory. However, Suzuki offers the ability for students to quickly play solo repertoire. I also incorporate learning and understanding scales for the purpose of learning fingering patterns and intonation.
