I began teaching cello part time 7 years ago when I was a freshman in college in Cincinnati. I’ve had the pleasure of teaching students from age 4 to 54. With students of all ages, I like to emphasize the importance of consistent practice in order to see improvement in their playing. However, I believe that learning to play the cello should be fun! I attribute development of my teaching method to having started as young as I did; it is my firm belief that students and teachers should learn together, and that, especially with younger students, that it should be fun, engaging, and even a little bit silly at times. I both encourage and require regular practice on a consistent schedule; practicing not only helps students further their progress, but it helps them to avoid burnout by maintaining a view of music as less of a chore and more of a fun activity. I have been playing cello for 20 years, after starting when I was 10. I was admitted to Jacksonville University at the age of 16 on a full scholarship, and there I pursued a double major in Music Theory Composition, and Cello Performance. I did my graduate work at Denver University, where I studied a variety of non-western musics, including Balinese gamelan, Ghanaian drumming, and Tuvan traditional music. I've had the opportunity to perform hundreds of times in my career in a variety of settings, including solo, chamber music, and orchestra. Read More

From 2004 - 2014 I taught all Band Instruments, Piano, Violin, and coached singing lessons at the McCord Gallery and Cultural Center in Palos Park, Illinois. I got start teaching lessons as 6th Grade Saxophonist. I was selected to tutor two students from the 5th Grade Beginning Band. One of my favorite parts about teaching is that oftentimes I learn just as much as the student in the teaching process. For beginner students, I start by working through Hal Leonard's Essential Elements book one for cello. After completing this book of fundamentals, I have the student work through Suzuki books 1-5.
