Effective music education is both developmentally and culturally appropriate: By working with the student to understand their interests, I hope to provide them with an experience that will enrich their musical and social life outside of the work we do together. Through infancy, I believe Music Learning Theory is effective for developing musical and linguistic skills. I grew up with music all around me. Both of my parents play classical instruments like the cello and violin. My childhood home was filled with sounds of classical and chamber music. Therefore, it is not so surprising that I too chose to move in the direction of music. I went to Bard College with no clear intent on what to do, but I continued to play in orchestras and chamber music groups, and knew that no matter which degree I chose, that I would always love playing the cello. I have been teaching for over 10 years as a faculty member at community music schools, as a chamber music and orchestral performance coach, and as an adjunct at Purchase College. My students have been accepted to college conservatories with scholarship, have perform solo at Weill Recital Hall and Symphony Space, had many successfully audition for youth orchestras such as New York Youth and Westchester County Orchestra, and have had individuals receive score high marks at NYSSMA that earned them entrance to All-County and All-State. I have been playing the cello for forty years and teaching for twenty. I love helping students of all ages realize their goals of playing and performing cello music. Although I do not have an academic background in music, I have studied privately with teachers who have been members of the New York Philharmonic and Juilliard faculty.
