For beginners, I would first teach them the basic sitting and hand postures, basic note-reading, and basic music theories. After they know how to play piano in an appropriate posture, I would like them to start with Hanon piano exercises. I believe it is a great book to warm up the fingers and a great finger exercises for all levels of piano players. I graduated at Boston Conservatory at Berklee with a Bachelors of Music Performance. The Culver City Chamber Orchestra has allowed me to present children's concerts, great works by famous composers, and it allowed me to form a superb "CELLO MANIA" ensemble. This ensemble is my favorite simply because it features 8 cellos!!! We perform classical music, pop music and even some Broadway music. For beginning students I like to begin with a combination of Hal Leonard's Essential Elements and Suzuki Method books. I find Essential Elements to be useful for learning the fundamentals of playing the instrument and music theory. However, Suzuki offers the ability for students to quickly play solo repertoire. I also incorporate learning and understanding scales for the purpose of learning fingering patterns and intonation. As students progress, I also find Rick Monney's Positions Pieces extremely valuable. Read More
