I believe that each person has a unique set of skills and characteristics through which he or she acquires knowledge, maintains and improves the acquired knowledge, and uses it to his or her benefit. Therefore, although I do have a system that I follow, I attend to the specific strong and weak points of each student. My goal is to be present in each and every lesson and to focus on each student's current level with the understanding that only through direct and personal guidance could my students improve and thrive. I like to make learning an instrument an enjoyable experience and allow students to progress at their own pace. I also introduce them to different styles of music such as classical, folk, Broadway musicals as well as popular songs. In addition, I teach students new skills and techniques to enhance their playing abilities. I encourage my students to practice, ask questions about the music and how it should be played with respect to the technique and expression required to perform a piece of music effectively. Read More

I gravitate towards the Essential Elements for Strings books for beginner students because the books so effortlessly combine the first steps of cello playing with basic concepts of music theory and history. I then use a combination of cello duets, etudes (like Dotzauer and S.Lee), and method books (Feuillard) for technical studies. I always incorporate traditional music for the cello (like Bach Cello Suites, famous cello concertos), but work with students on whatever music they enjoy. Read More

While I work with all students to build a solid technical cello foundation, I want my students to play and immerse themselves in the pieces and music they love most so that they stay inspired to explore the cello. WIth the understanding that everyone has different aspirations and expectations, I teach students with the hope that they are all comfortable challenging themselves, learning from making mistakes, and are ultimately happy with their musical progress. My teaching is strongly influenced by the Suzuki method and the teaching methods of Mimi Zweig and Susan Moses. I incorporate Dalcroze Eurhythmics and general music theory and ear training into each lesson. I believe that learning to play an instrument should be fun and enjoyable, while simultaneously stretching a childs musical imagination and growing their cello technique. At the heart of my teaching is the study of technique, for as ones technique improves, the musical rewards always increase. Read More

I don't have a singular method because every student is different. At the beginning of my lessons with a new student we will begin getting to know each other. Then we try different things. Some students are naturals at imitating what they hear, so we play to those strengths. Other students are more comfortable with structure and math, so we take that route instead. What I find most important is being flexible. Read More

I adjust my private instruction based on student interests- if a student is into composing or using programs like finale or garageband, we construct lesson content around these interests. There's always the inclusion of music theory, at all levels of experience, because I feel that it is necessary for students to understand how the music is created and why in order to become better performers and musicians. I never let a student let a bad day get in the way of having a productive lesson- I like to touch base on how they're doing, and if things aren't going so well, we will always be able to find something positive that's going on in the lesson.
