I enjoy teaching all ages, and the most rewarding thing about it is when my students show improvement, take initiative to enter into the larger community (through a recital, stage performance, competition, or other activity), and achieve their goals! To inspire this I teach students at his or her own pace. With each lesson, we identify what needs work, work together on the rough spots, and determine what to practice- and how- so as that these things are no longer difficult. Read More

My teaching method will be largely based on what you want to accomplish as a musician. My students taking the classical route will become familiar with the Suzuki Method books. I like to supplement this with etudes, folk tunes, and something of personal interest to you (pop music, world music, video game, etc.) If you are more interested in a fiddle/bluegrass approach, I will start you on the O'Connor Method books for violin/viola. I began giving private and group music lessons soon after graduation from high school in 2002, and quickly learned to love it. During college, I took on some new students and continued to gain experience in a variety of instruments as I took classes and taught not only cello, but also piano and violin. Within months of my college graduation, I became involved with a mission school in the Dominican Republic, where I taught music theory, history, chorale, and private lessons -- all in the Spanish language. I love seeing my students get excited when they play a song perfectly for a performance, and I understand that there is a long road to get them to that point. I am a firm believer in using encouraging words over disciplinary actions when a student does something incorrectly. I have first hand seen the difference between the two and I have a history of my students always being excited to continue learning when they are encouraged. Read More

I started playing the cello in 5th grade after attending a Middle School showcase where they showed off all their clubs to rising 6th grade students. I ran away from my mother after seeing the Cellist play and went to talk to him. She found me an hour later in the Orchestra room playing with the instrument. Like the great mother she is, she took me to a local music store and had me playing shortly afterwards. Read More

For younger students, I will be using Suzuki Cello School to guide instruction. When students have successfully completed the Suzuki books, I will introduce them to pieces that would be suitable for a recital performance. For adults, I will base instruction off of Suzuki but also find material that will keep the learning process fun and enjoyable. This would include any modern or contemporary pieces that students are familiar with. Read More

I believe lessons should be fun. Yes, learning music can and should be challenging. But it also needs to be fun. I am a very performance-oriented teacher. So, once I get to know a student, we begin preparing to perform. If we are having fun while we work, we don't even realize we are working. Giving students really solid practice skills they can do on their own keeps them engaged. Read More
