I have been teaching music since I attended high school and have continued to do so for the past 6 years. Improvisation and expression are key points I like to emphasize in all my students, as anyone can sit down and practice scales until their fingers fall off, but being able to express yourself through a musical instrument takes dedicated work and direction. My students are made to create as much as they are made to perform, as understanding how music works and the theory behind it is achievable regardless of level or age. Read More

My experience dates back 10+ years when I began to seriously learn to play the bass guitar. Since then I have studied music theory in high school and college, played in a range of Massachusetts based bands and orchestrated the pits for 4 on-stage theater productions at Framingham State University. I have been playing drums and guitar for 5 and 7 years, respectively. Read More

For piano students, I like to use Alfred's piano methods. I find that their methods for both kids and adults not only covers the basic fundamentals of music, but they are also able to make everything comprehensive and enjoyable. For guitar, I like to use Hal Leonard's basic guitar book for students focusing on popular music and basic guitar, and for classical guitar I like to use the Christopher Parkening Method. Read More

I initially have a student work on a series of simple fingering exercises. This gets the student familiar with the feel of the instrument and helps to reinforce how the left and right hands work together when performing. Another benefit is that it helps the student to build speed/dexterity when playing. When these exercises/techniques have been mastered I then introduce the student to concepts such as notes, scales, intervals, basic chord structure, etc. Read More

I am an accomplished self-taught musician. I am classically trained in Piano, which made teaching myself guitar, bass, organ, and keyboards (multiples at once) that much easier, and then I took lesson in each to sharpen the skills. I am also experienced in arranging, recording, and mastering thus I bring a unique expertise in blend and improvisation. I am seeking a teaching position where my focus is assisting others in learning and/or honing a craft as opposed to my focus being on locating clientele or promoting myself. Read More

I started teaching when I was in college just a few private lessons here and there, which eventually landed my first job at a private school teaching clarinet. I have had students from 5th-9th grade primary at this studio with skill levels ranging from complete beginner to pre-college advanced. I have also taught many other instruments in smaller studios and can teach advanced students in any woodwind, and beginners on any other instrument in my profile. Read More

Depending upon what area/instrument of music I'm teaching, I use a number of different materials, including (but not limited to) Tonal Harmony (Kostka, et al.), Essential Dictionary of Music Notation, Accent on Achievement, Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, or Rock House Method (McCarthy). The skill level of the student also dictates what resources I'll use. In addition, I believe that the student should have control over his/her development as a musician, so I encourage my students to create a list of songs they wish to learn how to play. Read More
