I was self diagnosed with "music fever" as a very young child. I began playing shows and concerts with my family as young as 13 and, even then, I loved to teach, and share music with my friends and colleagues. Naturally I pursued a degree in Music at the University of Maine where I became principle bassist of the University Orchestra, and Jazz Ensemble. This combination, as well as countless other groups and performances, taught me a wide variety of learning, and playing styles that would inform the way I would teach my students. Read More

I am accomplished in sight-reading, ear training, improvisation, performing, transposing, designing, tuning, engineering, mixing, mastering, and trouble shooting in varied settings. I am a veteran. Most of my teaching experience is not music related, however I have given bass and piano lessons before. There are many similarities between music and anti-terrorism practices. Both require practice. Both require repetition. Both require vigilance and attention to detail. As such I feel I am qualified to assist students in establishing good practice habits. Read More

I typically start by teaching them the parts of the guitar how to hold a guitar and all the physical fundamentals including fretting notes properly etc... then I ask them what their goals are as a player if they’re interested in learning a lot of theory or just want to sing and play with their friends etc.… Then I teach them the names of the strings and tell them to memorize them as well as the dot markers on the fretboard and then I have them learn some strumming patterns and a few simple chords to get them started and then begin learning the names of the notes from open position to 12th and then learning The major scale up the neck one string at a time… And I also incorporate the use of a Metronome which I find is hugely important… Then we incorporate a simple song that they can play with four chords from there onto learning how to harmonize the major scale and then incorporate more theory… All the while assessing their needs and fixing any trouble spots they’re having… Then on to scales and more theory and More Metronome work...And every couple of lessons I teach them a new song of their choosing to make sure that they’re having fun fun fun Read More

I use several different method books for teaching. The books I typically use are Alfred's Basic Guitar, Mel Bay's beginner books as well as Hal Leonard's melody books. I teach beginner students the basics of how to properly hold their guitar, hand and finger placement, and simple note reading and chords. For more advanced students I teach theory and how they can apply it in order to be more creative. Read More

I do not subscribe to a specific style of/approach to teaching. I try to ascertain what a student hopes to accomplish when possible and plot a path toward achieving that end. The goal is to make and share music. To that end, it is fair to say that some aspects of musicianship cannot be ignored. Development of technique, the ear rhythm would of the most primary importance. My style/approach to an individual will reflect my interpretation of what best suits their personality with an emphasis on the creative aspects of the art. Read More

I began teaching in High School once my skill on guitar and bass had surpassed my band teacher; I was tasked with teaching the 3 bass students and 2 guitar students in the program and preparing them for the end-of-year performance. From there I began an odyssey spanning two decades working with students from 7 - 60+ and from beginners to advanced players. I have taught bass and guitar as a way to keep myself engaged and playing/learning even after retiring from touring, and have been lucky enough to have some of the greatest students a teacher could ask for!
