I always start with the absolute foundation and fundamentals of music. I find when I start teaching students that have taken lessons previously, there are many holes in their understanding of their respective instrument and understanding of music in general. Consistency and steady progression is vital. What method books I recommend vary depending on the instrument and will be discussed prior to the first lesson. I encourage all students to come prepared with pencils, folder, staff paper and approved method book. Read More

I like to lay a foundation for what musical notes are and how they relate to the instrument. If we're on guitar I will draw a piano keyboard and give the student the guitar string names and make them figure out the rest of the notes. Then I teach them what chords are and, now that they know their way around a fretboard, they can build the chords themselves. While most students aren't total beginners and won't need all of this groundwork to be laid by me, I've found that almost everyone has gaps in knowledge, more often than not when it comes to actual note names and the music theory behind the instrument. I make sure that beginner students understand the instrument and start with the proper technique before they can develop bad habits. I try to pick a song or finger exercises for them each lesson as well as a few exercises where they can develop their reading skills. As a student becomes more comfortable with the instrument that is when we can get into more challenging pieces of music as well as different scales and exercises that will help them with their improvising as well as their overall understanding of music. I believe the most important part of lessons is the student's engagement. This is achieved by understanding what they want to play and tailoring lessons around that music. When a student is engaged in the songs they are learning, they are more motivated and excited to learn. This makes it so fun to practice that they won't be able to stop! This will amplify all their skills and they will progress much faster. Read More

I base all my teaching on all the different private lessons I've received over my 10+ years of playing and learning guitar with very different guitarists/musicians. I started playing when I was 11, but I find that for any beginner, it's important to start with material that gets instant "musical" sound from the guitar. I believe this consists on working on basic chords which you can use to start singing songs, or learning some easy riffs or melodies that will have you playing music in a matter of a few weeks.
