Whether you are a beginner or a professional, I cannot stress the philosophy that practicing a little each and every day is vastly more important than trying to cram it all into one day out of your week. If you are a beginner we start with the very basics such as the Hal Leonard method or something similar. I also find it very important to learn your musical tastes and goals! Read More

For students who already have a few lessons under their belt or have some self taught experience, usually my first step is to identify what conceptual gaps in their fundamental knowledge they might have so that they can very quickly explore the guitar more intentionally on their own in-between lessons. We often start with a song they've been listening to, and begin to break down what make chords and chord progressions sound the way that they do, so it's very easy to apply them in other situations. I think it is important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. Everyone learns differently and everyone has different interests and goals. My goal as a teacher is to try and cater to the student's interests. My mission is to give you the tools and knowledge to be able to play the music want to learn and be able to give the instruction to be able to be creative on your instrument. Read More

I settled in Atlanta in 1973, and started school in 1975. I went as far with school as my VA benefits would get me and then I left school, and got a job teaching in a local Atlanta store. I have been teaching, practicing and playing full time ever since.I love showing students how to work to learn, once they see how work pays off you can't stop them. I have my own Learn To Play Guitar book that I now use as handouts that have vocabulary, open chords, bar chords, inside chords, along with major and relative scales. Read More

Because I teach only part-time, I have a limited number of students so I'm able to create custom lesson plans for each individual. My goal for a first meeting with any student is to get to know the student. I want to know what music the student is into, what they want to focus on, why they're taking lessons and what their goals are. From there I can create a lesson plan that is a productive balance of fun, intriguing, challenging and fulfiling. Read More

For beginning folk/pop guitar students I use the Hal Leonard Guitar Method. For Classical guitar I use a combination of various resources, including Segovia scales, Sor studies, Guilianni right-hand studies and Frederick Noad method books. I definitely encourage students to work towards performance of the music they are working on, and try to schedule recital/performance opportunities as students deveope and gain mastery over their material. I always try to maintain a healthy balance between keeping the student working on music that challenges them, and advances their technique, with the need to have fun and enjoy the playing of a musical instrument as a means of entertainment and relaxation. For beginning students, I typically start with lessons I have developed to get them on the right track . Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce bass parts that are appropriate for their first performance with other musicians. Ultimately every student is different and has different needs and expectations. With that in mind I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Read More

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
