How one ends is contigent on how they start, so I make sure beginners have proper technique before moving on to repertoire. I try to make sessions memorable and keep the content engaging so that students can carry that with them throughout the week. I find if students aren't engaged in what the current task is, they will find it difficult to move forward and progress through their learning process.
