I try to custom my teaching style to the student that I am with so that the student can learn in the best way possible. I will always reinforce my lessons with method books such as William Leavitt's modern methods for guitar and reading studies, while also transcribing songs for students and creating lesson plans and diagrams for them. I will almost always start lessons with beginners who are children with the Alfred method books. These are a very straight forward 3 book set that takes kids from knowing almost nothing technical about music to being able to play and read quite complex arrangements. Once we get our feet planted in this area I will expand into using chord charts and other materials to supplement. Once that is begun we usually start to make up a list of songs that the student may be interested in learning so I can build up the vocabulary to achieve at least a simple arrangement of those songs. The best feeling for me is seeing my students progress and enjoy playing the guitar. I always set goals for my students from lesson to lesson so that we can optimize what we do in each meeting. We will have short term and long term goals that we work with in order to achieve what a student would like to learn on the guitar.
