Once the student has progressed and has a good grasp of the fundamentals, I will bring in other repertoire appropriate to their level. I have my students provide me with a list of artist or bands that they enjoy listening to as well as songs from those artists that they are interested in learning. I like to give scales and a practical theory lesson each week, then transcribe a song for the student to learn that relates to the weeks lesson. I focus my teaching technique on scales and arpeggios to show that music heavily comprises of these fundamental elements. For beginners, I often keep my approach lax and hope to not overwhelm them, as Ive seen many a beginner quit due to lack of confidence and understanding.
