Depending on the instrument, I will bring in another method book specific to that instrument book and we will also use some sort of etude book. Whether you are belting out Celine Dion or delicately exploring the passion and beauty of a Schubert Art Song, 99% of the technique remains the same--the fundaments of breath support, posture, vowel shape, formants, laryngeal posture, etc. As an instructor I reinforce those fundamentals very hard from the beginning because establishing a solid technical base is paramount to healthful singing in any style. Every student is different, and for that reason I tailor each students materials to their needs. Some students are advanced enough to begin learning from Rochut's Melodious Etudes book, while some may need something easier than that, like Cimera's Phrasing Studies book. I focus hard on the fundamentals of the instrument and don't introduce material that is too hard for the student. I also want to make sure that the student is playing their school's band music correctly, and if they need help, I work on that with them. Read More
