Effective music education is both developmentally and culturally appropriate: By working with the student to understand their interests, I hope to provide them with an experience that will enrich their musical and social life outside of the work we do together. Music lessons should be fun  - I have practical tips for practicing but the student's desire to learn will be the drive. The most important thing is to keep picking up that instrument - even if its for 5-10 minutes a day. By modeling that all teachers are still students, I create a safe and supportive environment. As lessons progress another part of my teaching method is to teach students something they can be proud of. For younger students that might be a nursery rhyme they know all the words to and feel like they can perform for their parents, for older students it might be a song they love and hear on the radio and always wanted to learn how to play. By doing this early on I hope to show students that with their hard work they can make music they're proud of and show them the benefits of practicing and reaching goals. Read More

I do believe in the fundamentals of music and ultimately, no matter what you hear, learning music is not re-inventing the wheel. There is technique, reading music and understanding the basics of how the particular instrument works. I like the Essential Elements for Guitar or bass for guitarists and bassists and Alfred's Piano method books. Ted Reed's Guide to Syncopation is a good drum book. Ultimately I like to get the know the student as much as I can as soon as I can so I can help them get to what they want as soon as possible with a few laughs along the way. Read More
