For my first lesson, I ask my student to simply play something, whether it be a song he/she may have learned or something entirely impromptu. From listening to and seeing my student play, I can gauge his/her skill level in timekeeping, rhythmic phrasing, melodic phrasing, tone, musical interest, and hand technique. From there I can create a practice regimen that will facilitate my student's development in the most effective way possible. Read More

I currently play trombone in ensembles such as the Nashville Philharmonic Orchestra, Bone Therapy, Music City Bones, Music City Brass Ensemble, Franklin Brass Quintet, and in other freelance performances throughout the Nashville area. Even though trombone has always been my primary instrument I'm also very active playing bass guitar, playing in a wide variety of bands and genres ranging from hard rock to reggae. I believe that having an understanding and appreciation for other styles of music and instruments can help make a better musician, and learning a new instrument can be fun! Read More

I have used many different methods over the years and will supplement any method book to meet the individual needs of the student. My preferred method for young students is the FJH Harris Young Beginner's Guitar Method series. For older students I tend to use either Mel Bay or Hal Leonard methods to teach the fundamentals and then add onto them with whatever suits the student best. For advanced students I prefer the William Leavitt methods from Berklee University Press, which will be a challenge for anyone! Read More

I've touched on this briefly above, but, my main focus in teaching a student is always to help them find their own musical voice. For beginners this means, not only helping them learn the rudiments and basics of music, but also exposing them to various styles and approaches they may not otherwise encounter. Usually, this will lead a student to a level of inspiration where they see the learning of a musical instrument as a lifetime commitment and a journey that is constantly exciting and demanding. I have been a private music instructor since I was 17 years old. I have taught students from ages 4 to 50 and up. I am able to teach many different genres because I have performed, written, and produced them. All that I have learned has been hard won, and applied in real world settings. Not just a classroom. I have used everything that I will teach you In my career. Teaching music is one of my passions. Read More

My teaching methods for all instruments are to start with the basics and slowly build the foundation of a good, overall musician. For piano, I begin with Faber Piano Adventuresand Beginning Piano for Adultsby Bastien Bastien. With vocal instruction, I prefer to begin with vocal excrsises to strengthen the voice. Once the student is ready, we will move into repertoire like the first and second book of solos (for any range) by G. Read More

I've been teaching private lessons for approximately 15 years. I've worked with all ages and skill levels across many genres. I would say my speciality is working with teenagers and adults who are just starting to figure out more specific directions they want to move in, and helping them dial in their goals and musical vocabulary. I love a mixed approach using songs my students listen to, ear training to be able to play by ear more accurately/faster, practical applied theory so that students can take the concepts of songs they love and use them on their own terms, and understanding what it is to be a rhythm section instrument because everyone who makes music is responsible for rhythm.
