For beginners, I use Rebecca Simonfalvi's called "Potential Contender." It is geared for young children starting out in band. For adults, I generally move between Trevor Wye's "Beginners book for the flute" or the Rubank Elementary Method. If needed, especially with the young, I generally have my students take notes of lessons. I also teach basic theory to give students a deeper understanding of the music. I graduated from the State University of New York at Fredonia in May 2017 with two Bachelors degrees in music education and flute performance. In my time there, I completed secondary band methods, elementary band methods, elementary general music methods, as well as my student teaching at Morrow Elementary (band and general music) and Reed Middle Schools (band and general music) in the Central Islip School District on Long Island. Since most of the students I teach are members of a band program, I make sure that most of my lessons are based on what is being learned at school. Planning an individual practice schedule is imperative for their success but at the same time make it enjoyable so the student will want to practice. Constant acknowledgement of their progress each lesson the student more eager to learn. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for the fine arts! Therefore, it’s important that each student progresses at his or her own pace, I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a student’s desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. A method I use to encourage my student’s progress is to give them stars for when they work on their assignment; the stars they earn will allow the student to choose a song of their choice that is not from the same genre being studied—this may be a pop song. I find teaching more rewarding than performing. Seeing a student progress and make improvements gives me joy and seeing them find there own distinct beautiful sound is important to me. I like to know the students goals and purpose so I can tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. My favorite thing to teach is sound production and tone for the flute.
