No matter the level of the student, I think it is important for them to have achievable goals to work towards. I like to have my students always preparing for something, whether it is an audition, recital, or competition. We do this by working on a combination of solos, etudes, fundamentals, duets, and sight-reading activities. Saxophone/flute: Any beginning band method book or standard beginning to intermediate woodwind book. Appropriate repertoire. Piano: I use most beginning methods, including Alfred, Bastien, Piano Adventures (Faber), and other standard piano methods. As a teacher, I try not to stress rote learning but instead focus on explanations for why music works the way it does. I find that music of any genre is much easier to study if you have an understanding of the framework of what you practice. To that end, I stress technical study that works towards grooming pieces or songs for performance and make sure that my students have a complete understanding of both music and their instrument. Once the student gets in track, I start introducing more advanced book such Rubank, J.H Luft, H.Klose and Feerling. For adults and more advanced students, most likely I develop a custom guide and protocol based on what their focus of interest is. I started my musical journey when I learned the banjolele in kindergarten. I switched over to piano soon after and took lessons for a couple of years. My Mom played the piano when she was growing up and always wanted to be in the band. My Dad was in band when he was a kid. He even played in The University of Texas Band when he went there.
