Because every student has his/her own learning style, my lessons cater to those styles. I figure out a student's strengths and weaknesses. I acknowledge the accomplishments caused by the strengths while I focus on developing the weaknesses. For example, if a student excels melodically but has trouble maintaining accurate rhythm, I will engage the student in listening to and playing many interesting melodies that require him/her to pay close attention to counting the rhythms in order to master playing the melodies. I believe a strong working knowledge of rudiments is fundamental to establishing good hand technique. I create arrangements combining rudiments to promote memorization and musicality. In addition, I teach four way coordination exercises, to develop bass drum consistency and promote general coordination skills. Students will also be introduced to different types of drum fills that progress into more challenging combinations using both hands and feet. Primarily, I encourage my students to compose their own original music, so they feel great about their work and continue to progress. I've got my AA degree in Music at Los Angeles City College , later I graduated from Berklee College of Music receiving my BA in performance. I'm a very experienced music teacher and performer. I have been teaching music for over 6 years and I have been playing music over 12 years. I graduated from William Paterson University with a Bachelors degree in Music Education and with a minor in Jazz Performance. I teach locally at Newark public schools and I am also the pit/indoor director at west Essex high school.
