Our music lesson students will have the opportunity to take lessons from the comfort of their own home or in one of the teachers studios. Careful attention is placed on each student to ensure a custom lesson plan. As an educator, my primary focus for my students is developing their love and joy for music-- as well as teaching each student how to practice smart at home. I also like to develop my students' creativity and freedom with their instruments from an early age by guiding them through improvisation training. My teaching experiences include Teaching Assistant at Stony Brook University where I taught undergraduate level students. Mike started playing and became obsessed with the cello at age 16. He would fuse this new-found obsession with the passion he had developed years earlier for heavy metal music. This has defined the unorthodox style he's developed. His music fuses his classical training with his love of heavy metal, fantasy, film folk music. I have been teaching private lessons since my undergraduate days, working in public schools in private studios and independently. I offer lessons to cello students of all ages in and around Red Hook. I have extensive experience teaching students ranging elementary school-aged to retired. My priority is to keep in mind that each student has different needs and strengths. As a multi-instrumentalists, I use a cross disciplinary approach even when a student is only learning one instrument. I do make use of method books for beginners, and the specific book depends upon the instrument, but I have my own methods and materials which I utilize in my lessons. Building a repertoire is encouraged, and I use the material to assist in instructing in theory and musical communication. My method is very flexible and student specific. Everyone learns slightly differently and has their own unique strengths. In general, I have a "sound before sight" method. Students learn music thoroughly, aurally and theoretically before trying to read it off the page. Imagine trying to learn a language by being handed a book.
