I have been teaching private music lessons for more than 30 years at my home and at my student's homes.  After I received my Master's degree I obtained my teaching certificate in vocal and instrumental music for grades K - 12.  I taught vocal music for the Jersey City Board of Education and later I taught strings for the  Kearny Board of Education.  I prepared students for auditions and recitals always encouraging them to practice and learn music theory and music history. Usually in my lessons I like to hear the student play something from start to finish just so I can listen and take in what exactly a student's strengths and weaknesses are. Encouraging strengths, and praising accomplishments, is a great way to help a student to progress. I try not to dwell on mistakes or weaknesses but try to demonstrate or push the student in the right direction. Read More

For beginner students I usually start with teaching the fundamentals of how to hold the cello and bow and how to make a sound, using Pizzicato and bow movement. I then introduce the Suzuki volume 1-4 books and make sure that the student learns a piece that will help him or her improve the most but at the same time will ensure an enjoyable and successful learning experience. For intermediate and advanced students I usually get familiarized with the student's skill level during the first lesson and build an individual curriculum for each student that will involve pieces the student loves and wants to play, pieces that will challenge the student, and pieces that will help the student reach his or her goals as a cellist and musician Read More

Within the first few lessons, you'll be able to fluently read music and as time goes on you'll be able to perform classical literature or compose your own music. I have a historical basis behind my musical decisions so we will study old traditions and new ones from various sources. I have always liked this statement: "The only difference between a student and a teacher is that the teacher gets the student to where the teacher is only quicker." Sometimes students would feel agitated about practice. I would try to instill the desire and patience into the student to make them realize the rewards of hard work and practice.
