I believe that each student needs to set their own goals and therefore I like to go at the pace my students prefer. While I am happy to help set some basic goals and will assign work to do outside of our lessons, I believe that long term goals are our own. Therefore, if you are getting ready for college auditions or simply improving your singing so that you can share your music with loved ones, I will go at the pace required by your goals. Read More

Working for a local drum teacher in 2005, I started teaching private music lessons in students' homes. From there, I took up residence at a local music store where I taught guitar, ukulele, bass, harmonica, songwriting, and music theory for the next fifteen years. During the pandemic, I added teaching virtually to my repertoire and have fallen in love with it. Personally, I started playing music because I loved exploring and learning more about the music I I was already listening to--and I desperately wanted to learn how I could create my own sounds. In the Summer of 2013, I performed the role of Suor Osmina in their production of Suor Angelica, and covered the roles of Fortuna and Venere in their production of Lcoronazione di Poppea. Rachel made my operatic debut with Rice University in their fall of 2012 production of Volpone as Celia. With Rice University, I was also featured in their scenes programs as Mimi from La Bohme, Ilia from Idomeneo, Rosalba from Florencia en el Amazonas, and Mrs. Read More

My teaching style is very transparent; I want my students to recognize what we are working towards and how close they realistically are to that goal. This way, the student and I are working together to achieve a greater understanding of their instrument! I love feeling like I'm helping a student gain an understanding of a topic, rather than simply dictating a list of rules to know. I myself have an appreciation for many different styles of music, so I do my best to help students understand stylistically what is appropriate, necessary, and customary about the repertoire they are performing. Music should never be stressful to any degree. The goal is to share my love of music and singing with my students so that they may go on to share that passion with others or just to love this art form as much as I do. I am careful in noting a students' progress and am very attentive in what each student needs to succeed. I am a firm believer in the idea that EVERYONE can sing and the only thing holding us back is the lack of knowledge as to what barriers we need to drop and the things we need to do to be able to do so. When teaching both voice and piano I find music literacy vital. In younger students first developing aural skills, I like to sing and repeat tonal and rhythmic patterns. I also give handout assignments to learn notes on the staff. With older and more experienced students, I devote time in each lesson to sight reading and sight singing. I use the Adventure series books for all of my piano students, as well as outside literature. Read More

Whenever I give a student a critique, I always begin by saying something positive they did. Then I explain the critique and how they can improve the next time. I want my students to feel like they have accomplished something, while knowing that there is always room for improvement. Positive reinforcement always keep the students motivated. As far as repertoire goes, I allow my students to pick their own music while incorporating my suggestions for repertoire to learn. Read More
