In 2018, I graduated from New York University with a Masters of Music in Composition for Film and Visual Media. My projects include film scores, chamber and large ensemble compositions, musical theatre songwriting, choral music, and electroacoustic and intermedia projects. I spend a couple of minutes every week quizzing them on their keyboard note identification until this has become a solid foundation for them. For additional practise, I have them colour in worksheets in addition to the quizzing. We also play the keyboard race game which is always a hit with students. A number of my new students in this age category are transfer students who have been learning for some time and are reading music notation in their method books, despite having significant trouble identifying notes on the keyboard quickly. My teaching style is very much praxial and based off of skill reinforcement. For any instrument, I will incorporate the Kodaly method (solfege) of musicianship into the curriculum. For me, my goal is to teach the student how to learn for themselves. I focus on practice techniques, assessment of tone, sound, rhythms, pitches, etc. Rather than spoon feed all of the answers to the students, I wish to encourage each musician to develop their own critical mind towards the art that they create. I offer challenges to each student at their particular level, and encourage them to pursue performance opportunities, if desired. Eventually, students from the group classes started to seek me out for individual lessons and I was also invited to be the lead vocal coach for a singing competition called ETTV Top Stars held by ETTV America in 2017 as well as 2019.
