I recently graduated with my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre from Shenandoah University, where I am currently pursuing my Masters of Music in Vocal Pedagogy with a Contemporary Commercial Music emphasis. I'm a passionate and motivated instructor who loves working with students and sharing my love of music. I graduated from George Mason University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Piano Performance. Performing all over the Northern Virginia and several states has been one of the greater experiences of my life as a musician, and I've had the opportunity to play both at the Performing Arts Concert Hall in Virginia, as well as music teacher as several performances as the principle pianist with Va Youth Orchestra. I begin with determining the objectives of my student. For example, a student may want to work on increasing his/her range, improving tone, learning techniques for a certain style, or may want to establish a repertoire of songs or “90-second cuts” for an audition. With that information, I design a program to meet these objectives. We proceed at a comfortable pace and monitor the goals and objectives often. For beginning students I stress the importance of reading music, so I heavily work on their rhythmic and melodic vocabulary. I am not set on a particular methods book because I am a firm believer that all students learn differently and some methods work better for some than others. I believe that each student has their own unique way of learning, so I tailor my lessons to fit. To help reduce tension that can affect singing, I begin lessons with stretching and breathing practice. This gives the student a chance to unwind from the day and to focus on the lesson. I like to give my students specific practice instructions, so that their home practice is productive and I also believe that immediate feedback is important to help guide a student’s learning.
