Overview:

I am a passionate performer and instructor, and I love working with students of all ages. I recently graduated with my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre from Shenandoah University, where I am currently pursuing my Masters of Music in Vocal Pedagogy with a Contemporary Commercial Music emphasis. I am a working actor, as I am currently auditioning and staying active in the industry. This is what makes me the multifaceted, fully equipped teacher for musical theatre students. See you in the studio!

EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching private voice for five years, and I specialize in a multitude of styles, including musical theatre, legit, and pop/rock. Additionally, I have worked as a teaching assistant for Acting Through Song class at Shenandoah Conservatory, and I recently music directed a production of REEFER MADNESS. My passion for teaching begins with the students’ need for artistry. Singing is a beautiful way to express emotion and convey stories, and my job is to help the artist do so in a sustainable, creative fashion.

METHODS USED

I am an evidence-based voice teacher. This means that I approach teaching from an anatomical point of view. I value the importance of science and knowledge of how the voice works. For all students, I begin with finding relaxed positions and strengthening exercises. It is important to find your voice! I prefer to talk to singers about what they like in their voices and what they’re specific goals are. I create lesson plans filled with exercises targeting those areas, and then we achieve those goals together!

LESSON STYLE

Singing is fun! I love to watch my students be passionate about the material they do, and select repertoire with specific intent. I excel in repertoire finding and coaching, and I like to give song options to students— though it is up to the singer to perform what they like. Learning to sing is a different process for each person individually, and I believe that there is no fixed formula for all singers. Each student is unique, and that is the most exciting part of teaching! I am committed to helping people find and own their artistry, and sing in the way that serves them best.

Her acting-driven teaching style was so effective for me because it allowed me to get out of my head and free up my voice to do things I didn’t know I was capable of.

Emily is extremely encouraging and knowledgeable! Her lessons always feel like a safe space to explore and try new things, and I always finish lessons energized and excited about my material and growth. I couldn’t recommend her more.

I love Emily’s approach to teaching! I came into her lessons as a dancer knowing nothing about voice and having no confidence in my vocal abilities, and I feel all of that slowly changing! She is incredibly patient and receptive, with the belief that with proper exercising, anyone can sing. For me, she always finds ways to apply voice to the body and muscles, which I love as a dancer.

Taking singing lessons is very much out of my comfort zone but Emily makes it such a safe place. I feel like I learn something new every lesson and after only a few months I can already see significant improvement in myself. Emily is just overall such an attentive teacher and caters to each persons specific needs.
