I encourage all my students to learn the basic rudiments of music including music theory, sight-reading and playing ‘by ear’. I recommend Mel Bay’s “Children’s Guitar Method” and Hal Leonard’s “Guitar Method Book 1” for school age children. However, many of my students have decided to concentrate on learning basic theory involving chords and scales to develop ability to play ‘by ear’. Classes are broken down into three sections 1. breathing and body exercises 2. vocal exercises 3. repertoire and style. In the breathing and body exercises we discuss the idea of breathing for singing and proper vocal support. This is fundamental to good vocal technique and is the basis for everything that we will be working on achieving with our voice.
