I like to promote a positive and encouraging atmosphere, whilst also providing constructive feedback during lessons. If there is something a student is having difficulty with, I look at various ways in which we can work to improve the situation. I like to keep lessons fun and engaging but am also very passionate and serious about singing, so my style is a healthy mix between the two. I am a big believer in the breath. For a beginner I do a lot of exercises with breath connection to encourage healthy, connected singing. I like the idea that the voice dances on the breath and is buoyed and protected by that technique. I am also a very physical teacher, encouraging students to use their whole body in the act of singing. The voice is carried by the whole body and not just the muscles that are the vocal chords. As a teacher, I have worked on vocal technique and coached audition material with many fellow actors. I have also worked with high-schoolers on material from musicals. I am a very patient, fun and challenging teacher for all skill levels.  I have small recording studio in my home that I use to make demos for my students, or record lessons and backing tracks. I start off all beginning students by teaching them the fundamentals of singing. If students have taken lessons in the past, I work on reviewing fundamental concepts with them. When a student first begins lessons, I typically spend more time on helping to build the student's technique than on repertoire, and as the student progresses, I split the lesson more equally between the two components. I believe in motivating students by helping them learn the repertoire to which they are most attracted, though I do also give them repertoire of styles with which they may be less familiar in order to help them solidify their technique. I tailor warm ups to the student's repertoire and change it up frequently so the student doesn't get bored or go on autopilot. For all vocalists, regardless of age, we work on breathing properly and posture, then moving on to tone and stylistic choices.
