After teaching myself theory at the age of 4, I received my first musical instruction in 6th grade. At that time I learned to play the flute. This is where my musicianship began to blossom and opportunities were sent my way. Thanks to my love and dedication, I was one of a few placed in special bands. Auditioning & being selected for choruses during this time increased as well. As a result of my hard work, I was offered & accepted the positions at section leader and Drum Majorette in my high school's concert and marching bands & after joining choir my junior year I became lead soloist of the choir. In teaching, I have found that the best teaching philosophies are those that are student- centered. I teach with these strategies constantly as I feel that they are important in every single way. These philosophies include: Humanism and Constructivism. Humanism focuses on encouraging each child to his or her fullest potential, while constructivism focuses on student experiences. Hello! My name is Kayla and I have been performing, recording and training for more than a decade. Music has always been a part of my life and I have a bachelor's degree in business and music. After studying opera at The Boston Conservatory for one year, I transferred and finished my undergraduate coursework at Webster University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music in 2009. I studied voice under the direction of Debby Lennon, and was involved in numerous choral events, opera scenes, and jazz concerts. Shortly after graduation, I opened my lesson studio, and have been teaching ever since!  Many of my students have landed lead roles in school and community plays and musicals, and have also been invited to perform in the childrens, and teens choruses for The Muny.  One of my students even made it to Hollywood Week on American Idol this season!
