I base my teaching methods on the student I am teaching. For students that are children at a beginner level, I typically begin with the essential elements of creating vocal foundation which I draw from many sources. Once we have set a good foundation, we tend to begin working on repertoire that is appropriate for the level at which they are singing, using those songs as learning opportunities. The classical repertoire will reinforce the technique and specific lessons covered. The other pieces should also reinforce specific concepts and skills, but should be music the student enjoys. I strive to keep the lessons and the practice time engaging and rewarding. I cannot stress enough that music is a talent, and just as importantly a skill that anyone can develop. Some students love classical music, and we work on Italian arias...while others love 80s Metal Bands, and we work on healthy ways to approach contemporary music.
