I began teaching private lessons in college and continued to teach one on one lessons and larger group lessons for the next several years. The key to success in lessons is to practice at home and come ready to learn and have fun! Anything worth doing will come with challenges and hard work, and there are few things and gratifying as learning to sing or playing an instrument! Music is "whole brain" learning that combines our intellect, our fine motor skills, our affections, and our ability to multitask. Read More

For more advanced students, I like to lean towards assigning some transcriptions to learn, and hand-picking what artists' playing will benefit my students the most. For all students, I also enjoy diving into some music theory and explaining why things work and why things in music make sense! Most of all, I want to make sure my students are engaged, having a good time, and are given enough material to work with in and out of lesson time to make sure that they have the tools to be the best musician they can! For beginner piano students, I have found the Faber Piano Adventures books to be quite successful. For other lessons, I try to tailor them to each student and find materials that fit with their unique music goals. I have drawn from a variety of music resources, as well as my own knowledge, to help students learn through their own unique way of thinking. I believe it is important to build off of the skills that students already have, and to find ways to support them as they grow in other areas. Read More

For piano- I teach out of several method books- Faber, Bastein, John Thompson and Alfred's. I also implement Dozen a Day for piano technique and Hanon and scales. I use Czerny for the intermediate student. For voice- I work to build a solid understanding of breath, posture, vowel sounds and shapes, singing legato, etc. I believe a classical technique in both instruments is the best foundation for growth into any style. I like to build units or goals for each student when private teaching . It helps me and the student know what needs to be worked on. I also tend to be a visual instructor , meaning I like to use tricks to teach students different vocal technique. Although I do not mind accommodating to a students needs if their instruction is to be taught differently. I want to make lessons as fun and educational as possible and I expect student to put in their input to what they want to learn. Read More

As a guitar teacher, I like to start with getting the student accustomed with each string, including how to tune a guitar and how to play different notes on each string. Next, I start teaching chords by starting with E minor and then moving as little as possible with the fingers so the student can understand the relation between certain chords. For voice, I start with posture and breath support and work on vocal techniques before we even start with singing songs. Read More
