During the first lesson I have the student sing (if it is a vocal lesson) their favorite song so I can hear them. After that i use my keyboard and take the student through some excersizes to really home in on that range. I listen for qualities and we discuss the positives and what improvements are needed. I teach beginning students both by rote and through reading. We use standard Suzuki books for repertoire and method books such as Wohlfahrt, Mazaz, and Sevcik. Very young students begin on Sassmanshaus since it is very engaging as well as well written. However if there is a specific book a student wants to learn from (such as a book from school or a specific style such as country or fiddle) then I am more than willing to teach from that. Read More

In December of the same year, I began my work as Music Director at St. Thomas More Church in Troy, part of the Diocese of Detroit. My work there was different from my previous position. This was a more “contemporary parish”. I used mostly contemporary catholic repertoire and had a strong focus on developing the vocal technique of the choir members.
